Training Basics
Train for the distances you will go on race day.  A 400 yard open water swim is decidedly different than doing a few lengths in a pool.  Portage  Lake typically does not sport huge waves but if the wind  is strong and from the right direction, the course could be choppy at a minimum..  If you need some guidance for starting out in multisport racing, take a few minutes and review Welcome To The Kraziness of Multisport Racing.

I put this sample training schedule together to help the Gazelle Sports Trizelle multisport program get underway for its first year.  Remember there is no hard and fast rule about training and what you need or should do any given day.  The goal is to simply be mentally and physically prepared for the distances and conditions you will be racing.

Most of all just have some fun.  If this is among your first multisport events, go the distance and get the feel for the process and hit it hard when you can. It quite often takes a number of races before you get a good handle on when and how hard you can go and balancing the effort and intensity against the course.

Never Leave Home
without...

Always, always, always bring a minimal took kit when training or racing. Its just common sense.  A basic kit like mine pictured here includes of course the kit bag, a couple tire levers, spare tube, patch kit, C02 tube and adapter, and a couple bucks. Practice and become comfortable replacing both front and rear tubes. The $5 is there for whatever might come up, and it can also be used as a spot rim tape enhancer if needed.

You will undoubtedly hear someone say they would never carry a kit during a race since it will either slow them down or they are out of the running for a podium slot if they have to take the time to replace a tube. It will not slow you down unless you are carrying a parachute off the seat post. Stuff happens on the road and you should always be minimally be self supporting.
